IntroductionOne of the top causes of cancer-related fatalities globally is liver cancer (LC). About 90% of primary LC are hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (1–3). Primary LC is associated with viral hepatitis (hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV)), metabolic alterations (alcoholic steatohepatitis (ASH), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)) (4), chronic exposure to aflatoxin, algal toxin-contaminated water, diabetes, parasitic infections, and genetic factors (5).
