1 Introduction Changes in the interannual variability (IAV) of vegetation greenness indicate the stability of terrestrial ecosystems (Berdugo et al., 2022; De Keersmaecker et al., 2014; Huang & Xia, 2019) and is critical for tracking the progression of vegetation-climate feedback under climate change (Alkama & Cescatti, 2016; Zeng et al., 2017).

1 INTRODUCTION Terrestrial ecosystems act as a land carbon sink that offsets about a quarter of anthropogenic CO2 emissions (Friedlingstein et al., 2022), and play an important role in slowing down the recent global warming (Shevliakova et al., 2013). The land carbon sink has increased considerably over the past several decades (Friedlingstein et al., 2022) and shows large variability from year to year (Cox et al., 2013; Wang et al., 2013).
