Ian McEwan first became well known as an author of short stories with the publication of First Love, Last Rites (1975) and In Between the Sheets (1978) and of novels with The Cement Garden and The Comfort of Strangers. His writing has been described as ‘shocking’ and ‘morbid’; his fiction has a pronounced interest in perversity arid depravity and specialises in the portrayal of private worlds such as those created by lovers and children.
