As I write this, the decision in Nevada has not yet been made regarding the outrageous proposal to train dental hygienists “on the job.”  In case you aren’t aware, the Nevada Dental Association and the American Dental Association are proposing this as a “solution” to the lack of dental hygiene workforce in the state.  This is a bad idea for so many reasons, most important it jeopardizes the safety of the patients we are bound to treat.

Have you wondered what it would be like to work outside a dental operatory and integrate your skills and knowledge with those in the larger healthcare community? I see several groups on social media for dental hygienists who have taken that step. Why haven’t more colleagues done so? When we consider what we have to offer the medical community as experts in oral disease prevention, it seems to be a perfect transition for us into the medical community.

At the Dentsply Sirona World Conference held this past September in Las Vegas, Dimensions of Dental Hygiene Editor in Chief, Jill Rethman, RDH, BA, FADHA, had the opportunity to interview two women leaders from Dentsply. Erania Brackett is the senior vice president of orthodontic aligner and solutions and customer experience. She is also the head of sustainability at the company. Andrea Frohning is the senior vice president and chief human resources officer.
