It is a reminder of the perilous state of the banking system in 2008, when she was head of special projects at the Bank and, as the mother of two young daughters, also alert to Peter Pan’s warning about the risk of non-believers to fairies. Breeden, 56, is now the deputy governor for financial stability at the Bank.

The Financial Reporting Council is taking an “axe” to a City code that sets out how shareholders should hold companies to account, in the latest attempt by a regulator to support the government’s growth agenda. Richard Moriarty, chief executive of the accounting watchdog, said the latest version of the the UK Stewardship Code, to be published this week, should reduce the volume of reports that signatories are expected to publish by up to 30 per cent.
