Those who drew hope from the letter 18 House Republicans sent to Speaker Mike Johnson last August calling for the preservation of energy tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act must be jubilant this morning. On Sunday, 21 House Republicans sent a similar letter to House Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith. Those with sharp eyes will have noticed: That’s three more people than signed the letter last time, indicating that this is a coalition with teeth.

On February 1 — that is, three days from now — President Donald Trump has promised to apply a tariff of 25% to all U.S. imports from Canada and Mexico, crude oil very much not excepted. Canada has been the largest source of American crude imports for more than 20 years. More than that, the U.S. oil industry has come to depend on Canada’s thick, sulfurous oil to blend with America’s light, sweet domestic product to suit its highly specialized refineries.

Since August, climate policy optimists have pointed to a letter sent by 18 Republican members of the House of Representatives to Speaker Mike Johnson imploring him to preserve the energy tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act. As of January, however, some of them will no longer be Johnson’s problem.

Let's get this out of the way: You don't have to turn vegetarian to make a meaningful dent in your carbon emissions. You don't have to start eating insects or experiment with precision-fermented plant-based proteins. You don't even have to eat less meat, necessarily. Just eat less beef - or, if you prefer the idea of "more" to the idea of "less," you could even say: Eat more chicken. Either way, the reason comes down to some of the simplest carbon accounting we have.
