Knight Foundation has made $6.9 million in strategic investments in 2024 to bolster nonpartisan, fact-based election coverage, and many of the tools and services we have supported will be useful for journalists next Tuesday. To the Editor:I am somewhat handicapped and generally walk with two walking sticks. I would like to give a big shout out to all the good people who go out of their way to help me. If I am going into Wawa or coming out, they hold the door or if I have a tray of coffee they will offer to carry it to my car. Any time I am in public people are willing to help. It’s not only me, I see them offer assistance to others as well. To me it proves there are many people who think of others, not just themselves.

There was a growing sense of optimism at last year’s Knight Media Forum (KMF). This year, there was a call to turn that momentum into action. New Knight president and CEO Maribel Pérez Wadsworth had her coming-out party in Miami, addressing the largest gathering in the history of KMF and taking questions from Axios senior media reporter Sara Fischer in a closing luncheon conversation. If you wanted to get to know Maribel and how she will lead, this was a great chance to do that.

For 17 years, Knight Media Forum (KMF) has brought together funders from around the country to evangelize the importance of supporting local journalism. The progress toward that goal has been consistent, but this year is the one where it feels things have actually crystalized. That’s because Press Forward—the huge collaborative of funders (including Knight) that has committed $500 million over five years to boost local news—is coming into focus right as we meet this week.

Wednesday was both a sad and a proud day for Knight Foundation, as it became public that Karen Rundlet—our longtime senior director of journalism—will be leaving us at the end of the year to become the new CEO at the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN). While we will indeed miss Karen, we’re excited for this new chapter in her career. And it is one she so well deserves. Since arriving at Knight as a program officer in 2015, Karen has been a leader and innovator on the Journalism team.

It’s easy to get caught up in the buzz of the $500 million-plus Press Forward initiative and its potential to transform local newsrooms across America. I mean, we’ve gotten caught up it in too; it’s been the subject of every one of these newsletters for weeks. But the past month has reminded me that part of what makes the work of newsrooms possible is support for legal services, freedom of the press, free expression and the safety of journalists. Without these protections, journalism cannot thrive.

For most of 2023, many in journalism have known about a funding collaborative being assembled to accelerate the promising trends we’ve seen in local news in recent years. This morning, that collaborative – called Press Forward – was officially announced, with more than 20 donors joining to support local news with more than $500 million in investments over the next five years. Knight will contribute $150 million in new funds as part of this transformative effort.

Independent local newspapers around the country are in trouble. They are the source of vital local information for communities, but they’ve suffered from sharply declining advertising, digital competition from social platforms, and rising print costs. When companies decide to sell their publications, they’re often stuck choosing between selling to a large corporate chain or shutting down, leaving their communities in the lurch.
