Jamal Lewis's path to climate work started when he came close to losing his life. In 2014, Mr. Lewis, a Maryland native, was a student at the University of Pennsylvania, pursuing a communications major and playing basketball, when he developed a staph infection in his bloodstream. Doctors put him into a medically induced coma for six days. He said he came so close to death that his parents were told to call in the family to say goodbye.

You might think it strange that the food system, which is responsible for a third of global emissions, is not brought up more as a focus of climate action. You don't see it in protest slogans, you don't hear politicians railing about it, and it's not often a leading subject at climate change gatherings.

The second outing was in Blake Garden, a public garden in Kensington, Calif., that boasts more than 80 documented bird species. The group leader, Sonja Raub, urged silence as we listened to what she said were California towhees, then lesser goldfinches, then spotted towhees. Next she directed our attention, and our binoculars, to the redwood tree in front of us. “If you see the tree bark moving, it’s probably a brown creeper,” Ms. Raub said.
