Porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2) emerged as a  clinical issue presenting as Post-Weaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS) in some isolated regions during the 1990’s. Although most DNA viruses have a reputation of being more genetically stable than their RNA cousins the PCV2 virus exhibits a relatively high evolutionary potential due to both high mutation and recombination rates. Consequently, different genotypes including PCV2a , b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i  have emerged over time.

Dr. Frank Mitloehner, Director of the UC Davis CLEAR Center, recently joined host Jamie Mackay on New Zealand’s popular radio show “The Country,” a daily program that dives into the nation’s largest industry, agriculture. Maple Leaf Foods posted solid financial results for the first quarter of 2025, reporting total sales of $1.24 billion, an increase of 8.2% compared to the same period last year. The company saw growth across all major business segments, with pork leading the way at 12%, followed by prepared foods at 7.1%, and poultry at 6%. Adjusted EBITDA rose 42.9% year-over-year to $166.3 million, with the adjusted EBITDA margin improving to 13.4%.

In early May 2025, approximately 90 American meat processors participated in a tour of German meat processing facilities in the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region, organized by the American Association of Meat Processors (AAMP) in conjunction with the IFFA trade fair in Frankfurt. The tour included visits to three family-owned German processors: Karl Eidmann in Bruchköbel, Der Ludwig in Schlüchtern, and Dieter’s Wurstladen in Lützelbach.
