Ever since the November election, various people have been making excuses for why Kamala Harris lost. They range from her lack of time to wage a general election campaign to her closeness to an unpopular former incumbent to the division within the Democratic Party as a whole. These are all clearly laid out and knocked aside at the end of the excellent book “Fight: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House,” by journalists Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes.

It’s pretty clear that Maine has a spending problem, exacerbated by Gov. Janet Mills’ reckless policies. In 2010, when former Gov. Paul LePage left office, the total state general fund budget was approximately $8 billion; today, it’s approximately $11.3 billion. It would be nice to think that we were just keeping pace with current programs. That’s not the case. Gov. Mills the minute she took office, and created the free community college program, to name just two.

Do you remember when Gov. Janet Mills promised not to raise taxes if reelected to a second term as governor? I sure do. If you do, too, good for you. The governor, apparently, does not. Mills first admitted that was a lie when she supported the paid family leave bill. She claimed it was a tough decision, but we all know that’s not true. It’s simply that, having gotten reelected, she now knew that she didn’t have to worry about the consequences of her decision.
