I know I have a problem, and I swear I could stop if I wanted, but my wife and bank account know better. In fact, I’ve been fawning over the prospect of owning a Hellion for years.

If you’re wondering why, it’s probably not what you think. When I first got into shooting, the gunshops around me either didn’t carry Taurus or priced them at or above guns from companies with objectively better track records for reliability.

I’m a big fan of AKs and the 7.62x39mm cartridge in general – which is why the new SIG MCX-SPEAR LT Rifle had me really excited. As an AK-lover, I have a pretty decent stash of 7.62x39mm and have developed a love for the round. Plus, when I saw the new Spear LT being offered in my favorite caliber using its short-stroke piston operation with the gun’s excellent modularity, I thought I might have finally found the ultimate AK replacement.

One of the best parts about working in the firearms media is having access to high-end firearms; but I never lost my love for budget-friendly, feature-rich guns like the new Stoeger STR-9S Combat. Maybe it’s because I started shooting when I was in college, and money was always tight, but I’m a fervent believer that when it comes to firearms, spending more money doesn’t always equate to better guns. That said, there is no shortage of cheap guns that are priced accordingly in the current market.
