Monterey Police Chief John Mackie, at right, presents awards to Officers Blake Bennett and Dylan Durham for their actions in treating a man who had been severely injured in a traffic accident on Livingston Highway April 13. Mackie said the two, as first responders on the scene, applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding and saved the life of the man, who lost his arm in the accident.

Hugs were exchanged and tears were shed as the family of the late Randy Heady attended a dedication ceremony at the Upper Cumberland Development District Wednesday. Heady, the Jackson County Mayor who passed away in January, had served as chairman of the UCDD Executive Committee, and the committee voted earlier this year to name the conference room after him. "This conference room dedication is more than just naming of a space," UCDD Executive Director Mark Farley said.

The Baxter Board of Mayor and Councilmen had been scheduled to vote this week on a budget and tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year, but decided to postpone the vote for the time being. "We're not there just yet," City Recorder Sharon Carlile said in requesting the delay. "There's still some little things to work out."The council also deferred action on a budget for the water and sewer funds, but Mayor Danny Holmes said the issue should be resolved by the next meeting.

When Monterey has a banana pudding festival or Clay County has a chocolate gravy festival, organizers assume that people will be coming from all over, but they are now using software to confirm that. Mark Farley, executive director of the Upper Cumberland Development District, told the UCDD board this week that officials are using data gathered by a company called Placer.ai to find out where visitors to these festivals are coming from.

The leadership of the Putnam County Election Commission changed Wednesday as Phil Adams turned over the chairmanship to fellow Republican Michael Detwiler. Democrat Amos Powers was elected secretary by the group. "I am honored to step into this role as chairman of the commission," Detwiler said. "I want to thank the commissioners for their confidence. Replacing Phil is obviously no easy task. He's got bigger feet than me ...
