Carbon dioxide, the most important man-made greenhouse gas, gets most of the attention in efforts to stem the effects of climate change. While methane is considered a much more potent greenhouse gas, it breaks down into carbon dioxide and water in the atmosphere within 12 years or so.

Much of the nation's stormwater infrastructure, designed decades to a century ago to prevent floods, can exacerbate flooding during the severe weather events that are increasing around the globe, new research led by the University of Michigan demonstrates. The problem lies in traditional planning's failure to recognize flood connectivity: how surface runoff from driveways, lawns and streets—and the flows in river channels and pipes—are all interlinked.

Maximizing the benefits of clean energy requires new ways to store it, and University of Michigan engineers will partner in a new research hub created by the U.S Department of Energy, designed to develop and further battery innovations. It is one of two new Energy Innovation Hubs led by national laboratories across the country. Argonne National Laboratory will lead the Energy Storage Research Alliance involving 12 universities and two additional national labs.
