The Hanover Barons erased a three-goal deficit in the third period and went on to beat the 73’s 5-4 in overtime on Saturday at the Essex Sports Centre. With the win, Hanover swept the best-of-seven Schmalz Cup final and claimed the team’s first title since 1991. “We played better than 0-4 in the series, but you know hockey,” said 73’s head coach Tony Piroski, whose team outshot the Barons 70-50 in the final two games.

Windsor’s Ali Saad, who was the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ first-round draft pick, was supposed to be in Regina on Wednesday as CFL rookie camps opened, but he’s been diverted. A six-foot-three, 280-pound defensive lineman, Saad has accepted an invitation to attend NFL rookie mini camp with the San Francisco 49ers, which is set for Friday and Saturday.

The 18-year-old Nesbitt scored a goal and added an assist on Saturday as Canada claimed the World Under-18 Hockey Championship with a 7-0 win over Sweden in Frisco, Tex. It marked the first time in the history of the tournament that Canada has claimed back-to-back titles and it also marked Nesbitt’s second gold medal in back-to-back years with Team Canada.

A fifth-round pick by Windsor in last month’s Ontario Hockey League Draft, the Spitfires are hoping that will become a normal routine for the 17-year-old Harvey. “We think he can be an immediate impact player on our team,” Spitfires’ general manager Bill Bowler said. Time will tell if the native of Beaver, Pa. will suit up with the Spitfires, but it was a good sign that the talented forward was in town for the club’s two-day orientation camp.
