A former priest has pleaded guilty to using an online chat service which discussed having sex with children. Timothy Gardner, of Medhurst Way in Littlemore, Oxford, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court. He admitted five charges including encouraging or assisting the commission of an offence, three counts of failing to comply with notification requirements and one count of breaching a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO).

A sculpture honouring the "forgotten" women shipyard workers of Wearside has been unveiled. The 6ft (1.8m) tall corten steel artwork, named Molly, recognises those who kept the Sunderland shipyards running while men fought in World War Two. Education Secretary and minister for women Bridget Phillipson cut the ribbon to reveal the statue, which has been installed on the riverside opposite the National Glass Centre.

A model boat sailing club says it fears for its future after plans to build a wildlife platform on a park's boating lake were approved. Plans for the 15ft (4.5m) long structure were lodged by campaigners who say swans, ducks and other wildlife need a "safe haven" in Sunderland's Roker Park. But concerns have been raised over its water quality during heavy rainfall because an overflow system carries run-off from roads into the pond.

Northumbrian Water is working to fix the burst water main, which flooded the road on Tuesday [BBC]A residential street has been flooded by a burst water main. Chester Road in Sunderland has been closed while engineers repair the leak at the Western Hill junction. Bakhtiar Ali, who owns the Sultan Halal Superstore, said the street had flooded before but on Tuesday evening the water was just a few centimetres away from entering his shop.

A rail operator has sought to reassure commuters to London as its rival operator is due to axe its services. LNER blamed a lack of passenger numbers for its decision to axe the Sunderland route, which will call at the city for the last time on 13 December. The move has been described as a "devastating blow" by councillors. Meanwhile Grand Central, which runs up to six services per week day, has said it "intends on continuing to serve" the city.

The court heard there was no footage of Mr Brown taking part in disorder in Middlesbrough [PA Media]A man accused of violent disorder during the summer riots will face no further action, a court has heard. Christopher Howard, 42, was on trial at Teesside Crown Court having denied the offence. Prosecutor Rachel Masters told jurors there was no footage of Mr Howard committing an offence in Middlesbrough 4 on August and no "realistic prospect of conviction".

Four men accused of taking part in violent disorder were not intent on engaging in a "peaceful protest", a court has heard. Kaleb Peacock-Lightfoot, 20, Joseph McKenzie, 28, Anthony Brown, 38, and Christopher Howard, 42, appeared at Teesside Crown Court after previously pleading not guilty to several alleged offences in Middlesbrough. On 4 August, unrest spread from an afternoon protest at the town's cenotaph and was described by officers at the time as "staggering".

Garry Bell says he has lost thousands of pounds and more than 150 members [BBC]A gym owner says his business has been "devastated" by floods caused by burst water mains pipes twice in nine days. Garry Bell, who runs Contender Gym in Stockton, said he had lost more than 150 members as he had been forced to close. After the second flood, it took him and his team about 17 hours to remove the water with buckets, he said.
