In the jungles of eastern Myanmar, insurgents fight the junta and dream of a new state. The rainy season had just passed when we made the difficult trek to eastern Myanmar last year to see how rebel troops were managing in the fourth year of war. Chinese students studying abroad report widespread fear that activities their peers take for granted – like attending vigils or openly discussing political views in class – could get them and their families back home in trouble, according to a report released Sunday from Amnesty International. The London-based human rights group interviewed 32 students across eight Western Europe and North America countries from June 2023 to April 2024.

Tursun Muhammad was thirteen when political persecution forced his family to leave their prosperous farm in Yarkant, Xinjiang, and flee over the Pamir Mountains. Tursun’s father was targeted during the Cultural Revolution for his wealth and the fact that he was a landlord, Tursun told RFA. After attending Friday prayer at the local mosque he was locked up for three days. So, he packed up his family and left Yarkant to journey into Afghanistan. It took 45 days to reach Kabul.

Financially strapped local governments and state-owned enterprises pose a risk to China’s future economic growth, the ratings agency Moody’s said today in a report downgrading the country’s credit outlook from stable to negative. Growing evidence suggests that the central government will be required to shore up the debt-laden entities, creating “broad downside risks to China’s fiscal, economic and institutional strength,” Moody’s said.
