Dundee FC face a huge decision in appointing their new manager. After a top six finish two seasons ago, followed by a relegation scrap in the season just ended, the quest for long-term stability at Dens Park remains frustratingly elusive. An unwise choice could set them back years; an inspired appointment could signal success for seasons to come. Many, including me, feel that Tony Docherty was harshly treated. But football is a brutal business and results are all that count.

With the Gary Lineker resignation dominating the BBC’s own news agenda, is it time for the corporation to follow the football presenter’s example and call it a day? Is the organisation past its sell-by date in a modern world where so many alternatives are available for us to choose whether we want to pay for them? The annual licence fee of £174.50 is a compulsory poll tax on the population and sadly I suspect my old employer is no longer trusted by, or relevant to, many folk in the 21st century.

Imagine St Johnstone or Dundee United owned by a billionaire. Football and speculation are joined at the hip so with Dane, Anders Holch Povlsen – said to be Scotland’s richest man – sponsoring Saints’ kit through his online fashion retailer MandM, some folk are putting two and two together and coming up with – well – four. After all, the man, reckoned by Forbes business magazine to be worth £13 billion, already owns FC Midtyjlland in Denmark and has other football interests too.

Dundee FC should look at Caird Park for the site of their proposed new stadium. Cairdy v Campy has only one winner in my view. A lot of work has gone into the planning for the Camperdown site but, with the council closing the golf course at Cairdy, a much better solution to the long-running saga of the Dark Blues’ new ground may just have opened up.

Maggie Chapman has made a mockery of her position as deputy convener of the Holyrood committee on equalities, human rights and justice. It’s no wonder the Faculty of Advocates have told her to apologise and consider her position. The recently elected Dundee University rector cannot continue in the role if the Scottish Parliament is to retain any shred of credibility.

Pretty sure that relegation wasn’t in the prospectus when Adam Webb took control at @StJohnstone hopefully they bounce back at the first attempt next season. Very sad to see them relegated. Had some great times covering them including a few great European trips with them 🥲
