RHODE ISLAND — With the weather starting to warm up, state beaches have started opening — and that means lifeguards are needed. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is still looking for lifeguards for the summer. Job openings are listed on the DEM’s website. Pay for lifeguards ranges from $18.75 to 20 an hour. DEM officials said compensation is based on location, experience, and position. Any new lifeguards hired by June 27 are eligible to receive a $500 sign-on bonus.

PAWTUCKET, RI β A Pawtucket man was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison after state prosecutors proved he strangled his girlfriend to death in 2020. The sentencing in Rhode Island Superior Court came following a five-day trial, and a jury on Feb. 24, found Victor Colebut, 46, guilty of domestic second-degree murder, domestic assault (third offense), and domestic criminal violation of a no-contact order (third offense).

Union Executive Vice President Jesse Martin said Butler Hospital will spend $1.8 million on temporary labor ahead of the strike, slated to begin at 6 a.m. Thursday.

PROVIDENCE, RI — A Rhode Island man admitted in federal court he cyberstalked a child and was distributing child pornography. Melvin Vidal Herrera Perez, 21, pleaded guilty Thursday to cyberstalking and four counts of distribution of child pornography. Prosecutors said Perez admitted to a federal judge he befriended a girl and encouraged her to take sexually explicit photos of herself. He also admitted to later using the pictures to threaten and harass her after she turned 18.
