Car design is something near and dear to my heart. As the author of the book, Mustang by Design where I profile the life of Gale Halderman, the principal designer of the Ford Mustang, car design is something I always pay attention to. Shouldn’t a car be something attractive that you’re proud to be seen in? Some cars leave a longer impression than others. Some span decades. Beyond design, some vehicles just have staying power. Some made a big impression in a short amount of time.

New Toyota Sequoia trim pays respect to ranching waysIn the year 1794 a ranch was established near San Antonio, Texas by a man named Juan Ignacio de Casanova. This ranch, El Rancho de la Purisima Conception, was a gift from the King of Spain and became a prominent cattle ranch. What does all this history have to do with my tester this week? Well where that ranch once stood is now the site of Toyota’s manufacturing facility.

Let’s say you have about $20,000 in your budget, and your car search criteria are fairly specific. You want a luxury sedan with a V8. While your pool of vehicles is small, it isn’t non-existent either. Scanning through various car listings, you notice two common vehicles that meet most of the criteria. The early to mid-2010s Lexus GS, a “steal” as a luxury sedan. But there’s no V8 option.

Small SUV gets refreshed looks, increased powerFor a city with a population of just over 6,500 people, Taos, New Mexico sure has made it big. It’s famous for being a good ski resort and it’s also rich in Native American history, specific to the Pueblo nation. But what does this have to with a car review? Well Volkswagen has named their subcompact SUV after this city. The name doesn’t necessarily fit but it still is better than some of the Taos’ alpha-numeric named competitors.

Follow the leaderIf there’s a leader (other than Tesla) in the EV world it just might be Genesis. Hyundai’s luxury brand has gone all-in on EVs and each offering is both stunning, fun-to-drive and impressive. My tester this week is the brand’s very first dedicated EV, the GV60. I’ve been fortunate enough to drive each model year of the GV60 since it was launched. And therefore I’ve gotten to see how it’s evolved, matured and remained relevant.
