After a saga that featured rejections from two franchise greats, New York Giants rookie Abdul Carter has settled on a number, his third choice. 51. The Giants announced the numbers of their rookies prior to the start of rookie minicamp on Friday, with Carter’s the one receiving the most attention. Carter had asked Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor to wear No. 56, and Phil Simms, the Giants’ two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback, to wear No. 11, which Carter wore at Penn State.

Jose Iglesias still seems to feel the pain of being rejected by the New York Mets this offseason. In speaking to reporters Wednesday before the series finale against the New York Yankees, the San Diego Padres infielder said that he never got an offer in free agency from the Mets, and he was “totally shocked. ... “That was a goal, to receive something and come back home,” per Newsday. And now, it appears he’s ready to make them pay for it.

More information has emerged on why quarterback Shedeur Sanders fell to the fifth round of the NFL draft, this time from three NFL team executives who spoke to USA TODAY in a story published Thursday. One of those executives works for an unidentified NFC team, which USA TODAY NFL reporter Jarrett Bell described as having an “established quarterback in his prime” and not a top-five pick.
