There were four and a half minutes to play in the fourth quarter, and a made 3-pointer had just brought her scoring total to 30 on the night. Surprisingly, Doogan missed four of her first five shots of the contest, but it didn’t take much longer after that for the University of Richmond women’s basketball team’s leading scorer to make her mark at historic Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, Calif.

University of Richmond women’s basketball senior guard Katie Hill said it best following the Spiders’ one-point loss to Saint Joseph’s University in the Atlantic 10 tournament semifinals on March 8 – that the sooner than expected exit from the tournament would not define their season. There was still postseason basketball left to be played, Hill noted in the postgame press conference. And she was right.

Almost a year ago, then-senior, University of Richmond women’s basketball forward Addie Budnik, and Head Coach Aaron Roussell embraced as she checked out of the game. The Spiders were moments away from winning their first conference championship since 1991, and Budnik, who dealt with a pandemic just months into her UR career and had battled all the way to the conference’s biggest stage, was celebrating with her head coach.

Come postseason play, there’s another level of intensity on the floor. All previous matchups are thrown out the window, as each team is fighting for their season to continue. This certainly proved to be the case in the University of Richmond women’s basketball team’s 63-58 Atlantic 10 tournament quarterfinal win over Duquesne University at the Henrico Sports and Events Center on March 7.

Hughes’ role on set is similar to the one he held on the University of Richmond’s football team. During his five seasons with the Spiders, he wasn’t always on the field, but he made up for it where he could with the little things. Hughes would often hold kicks and don a headset on the sidelines to help with signaling. “Even with a smaller role, I just tried to be a leader and help our team win in any way I could, and I really enjoyed it,” Hughes said.

This season, University of Richmond men’s basketball players have donned a number 10 patch on their uniforms in honor of Spider Athletics Hall-of-Famer Greg Beckwith, who passed away in May. Beckwith played for the Spiders from 1982 to 1986 and later served as the team’s color commentator alongside play-by-play broadcaster Bob Black.

The University of Richmond women’s basketball team put an exclamation point on its undefeated early-season run at the Daytona Beach Classic, picking up victories against Oakland University on Nov. 29 and Oklahoma State University on Nov. 30 in the post-Thanksgiving showcase. These wins solidified UR’s perfect 8-0 month of basketball, as the Spiders did not lose a game in November. They have yet to lose a game this season, in fact.

Up until its devastating 20-16 loss to Lehigh University in the first round Football Championship Subdivision playoffs on Nov. 30, it had been 84 days since the University of Richmond football team had lost a game. The Spiders, who started their 2024 campaign 0-2 following losses to the University of Virginia and Wofford College, completely changed the narrative surrounding their season and put together 10 wins in a row.
