Dana Schaumberg, Jefferson County Public Health nurse supervisor, wants to arm parents with resources and tips to help navigate the misinformation flooding social media.

    Denver Film’s CinemaQ Film Festival, which took place Aug. 8-11 this year,  celebrated 16 years at the Sie Film Center in Denver. CinemaQ focuses on narratives by, for and about the LGBTQ+ community. Keith Garcia, the festival’s founder and the Sie FilmCenter’s artistic director, said the 16th anniversary was a good time to start a new section of the festival. “We are celebrating, essentially, the creation of a new track that we have here at CinemaQ called BLQ,” Garcia said.

    The 40th annual National Night Out was celebrated on Aug. 6 across the U.S. Here in Jefferson County, the night became a summer celebration of the community in a few different ways. According to the National Association of Town Watch, the founding organization for National Night Out in 1984, the event is about building relationships.  In Wheat Ridge, officers aimed for that in their National Night Out event at Hawkins Park.

    At the beginning of August, Lakewood was the kickoff site of breast cancer awareness event season in Jefferson County. The nonprofit organization Making Strides Against Breast Cancer kicked off its season on Aug. 3 at Hangar 101 in Lakewood. The well-known fundraiser, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, is on Oct. 5 in Denver. Between now and then, the organization is working to spread awareness about its work and the stories of survivors who attended the kickoff.
