Denver Film’s CinemaQ Film Festival, which took place Aug. 8-11 this year, celebrated 16 years at the Sie Film Center in Denver. CinemaQ focuses on narratives by, for and about the LGBTQ+ community. Keith Garcia, the festival’s founder and the Sie FilmCenter’s artistic director, said the 16th anniversary was a good time to start a new section of the festival. “We are celebrating, essentially, the creation of a new track that we have here at CinemaQ called BLQ,” Garcia said.

The 40th annual National Night Out was celebrated on Aug. 6 across the U.S. Here in Jefferson County, the night became a summer celebration of the community in a few different ways. According to the National Association of Town Watch, the founding organization for National Night Out in 1984, the event is about building relationships. In Wheat Ridge, officers aimed for that in their National Night Out event at Hawkins Park.

At the beginning of August, Lakewood was the kickoff site of breast cancer awareness event season in Jefferson County. The nonprofit organization Making Strides Against Breast Cancer kicked off its season on Aug. 3 at Hangar 101 in Lakewood. The well-known fundraiser, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, is on Oct. 5 in Denver. Between now and then, the organization is working to spread awareness about its work and the stories of survivors who attended the kickoff.

The Jefferson County Public Health’s Women Infants and Children program has partnered with other local partners to celebrate breastfeeding. Cuenta Conmigo Coop, Mothers’ Milk Bank and Jefferson County Library helped organize a special session of their regular Mothers’ Milk Bank Baby Café. The Baby Café takes place every Monday at the Belmar Library for breastfeeding, lactating and pregnant families.

Around the county, RTD extends free rides for youths, and The Green at 38th in Wheat Ridge gets more funding for Phase Two. The Fairways for Hope Golf Tournament announces the funds raised during the event and more are happening in Jeffco. The Regional Transportation District Zero Fare for Youth program has been extended to a permanent fare change. The program began as a one-year pilot on Sept. 1, 2023.

Lakewood nonprofit Archway Communities has provided Colorado residents with affordable housing and supportive services since 1974. The company recently opened its first adaptive reuse project, the Mosaic Community, which combines affordable housing with sustainability practices. According to Katie McKenna of Archway’s development team, the company has adapted to a changing society over the last 50 years. Archway Communities has nine properties throughout the Denver area, McKenna said.

Wheat Ridge’s most anticipated yearly event, the Carnation Festival, is coming to town Aug. 9-11. The 55th year of the festival promises three days of fun, food, music, a parade, fireworks and more. According to the Wheat Ridge Carnation Festival press release, the festival is one of the longest-running in Colorado.

The Colorado Regional Transit District commemorated the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with a bus wrap contest. On July 20, the agency announced the contest winner and unveiled the winning design on a bus operating right now in the Denver Metro area. In a previous interview with Colorado Community Media, RTD Director of Civil Rights Carl Green Jr. explained that the Civil Rights Act deeply affected public transit in the U.S. over the past 60 years.
