    Deep within the heart of the Dee Estuary is an oasis of wonder and wildlife and never more so than in autumn. Summer's vibrant green has gone, and oranges and reds now set the tone at RSPB Burton Mere Wetlands near Neston, on the Wirral peninsula. There’s an autumn chill in the air, when suddenly through the midst of the dusky sky a ghostly, white and prehistoric figure cuts a shape in the distance, others appear, and a loud clattering chatter echoes through the air.

    A ‘flyway’ is a major migratory route used by birds to move between their breeding areas and the places they spend the winter. Several of these flyways or ‘superhighways’ for migratory birds exist around the world. The East Atlantic Flyway, which incorporates the coastline of East Anglia is one of a few major global bird migration routes. It stretches from the tip of South Africa right through to the Arctic Circle.

    As the seasons shift, the temperature starts to dip and the greens of summer are replaced by a palette of reds and oranges. Gone is the sound of spring songsters and the cheeping of young birds; the soundscape is replaced by something totally different, a true signal that times are changing. At first, it’s soft and distant, rapidly growing louder and closer as a squadron of geese appear overhead in their characteristic V-formation: ‘Wink-wink, wink-wink’.
