    It's a good question. As I reflected on what kept me going during those years, I found that the image of Thanksgiving gatherings actually provided an apt metaphor. Though my experience of Thanksgiving over the years has varied in location and cast of characters, it has always been about collectivity. A motley crew brings what they have and what they can offer to the table. We spend time together, long hours of chatting and eating, commiserating and celebrating. The dishes and roles vary.

    Every Monday, five nuns joined by 10 volunteers set out to clean and restore abandoned graves scattered across rural villages in Huong Thuy town in Vietnam's central province of Thua Thien Hue. Those graves, neglected for decades, are hidden beneath overgrown weeds and bushes, battered by years of rain and flooding. Often, only crosses or gravestones remain. As part of their grave restoration apostolate, the group also offers incense and prays for the departed souls.

    It's November and it's unseasonably warm as John John Brown, a Muscogee elder, works to replant peach saplings. "I haven't had much luck growing them from seed," he says. The reason, he thinks, is because peaches need lower temperatures. Around him, tiny peach trees the size of pencils stand above the browning grass underneath their parent tree.

    Maria Huynh Thi Kim Yen, member of the Association of the Daughters of Our Lady of the Visitation, brings meals daily to Le Thi Nga, 79, who lives alone in a dilapidated house. Yen also cares for the Buddhist woman when she is unwell, respecting her Buddhist beliefs. "Visiting and caring for people of other faiths is our top priority in our apostolic work," explained the head of 20 association members at the Van Quat Dong Parish in Thua Thien Hue Province's Huong Tra district.
