The party has pledged to protect the environment through tree planting, more recycling, and less single use plastics – all plus points. On agriculture, the party’s commitment to address unfair supermarket pricing and to boost local food sales is welcome; currently, farmers often receive less than 1% of the profit from food they produce. However, this is more than overshadowed by the party’s plans to scrap all climate-related farming subsidies.

The Greens’ commitments to issue no new oil and gas licences and bring to an end all subsidies to the oil and gas industry is the kind of bold, decisive action that we must see from all political parties. The importance of energy efficiency in meeting net-zero cannot be underestimated and it’s good to read of the party’s plans to embark upon a street-by-street programme to insulate homes and provide clean heating, helping to mitigate climate change.

Recent polling from The Wildlife Trusts has revealed that nature is not a partisan issue; almost identical numbers of environmental charity supporters vote Conservative as vote Labour.

Today, the Marine Management Organisation has announced proposals to ban damaging fishing activity within 13 English Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), covering an area of over 4,000 km2. These proposals could help move 13 more MPAs away from simply being “paper parks”, written on paper but with no real protection at sea. The draft byelaws would protect important rock and reef habitats from damage by bottom-towed fishing gears which drag along the seabed and crush fragile marine life.
