That was Brittany Boone’s response when she received an email gauging her interest in a new Virginia Commonwealth University certificate program that is helping professionalize the challenging field of youth development. Boone, a recreation program specialist for the city of Richmond’s parks and recreation department, is among two dozen inaugural members of VCU’s Advanced Certificate in Youth Development Management program. The cohort will soon graduate, and registration closes Aug.

    Amma Gatty had no intention of curating cultural programs for adults when she started the youth-focused nonprofit Next Star Arts Program in 2015. But in 2018, during Next Star’s summer camps focused on cultural diversity, she heard that parents also had interest in the cultural offerings their kids were enjoying.

    At Virginia Commonwealth University, Joe McCampbell is a rising senior majoring in clinical radiation sciences in the College of Health Professions. He’s also a 20-year military veteran who lost a brother in service, as well as many friends along the way. McCampbell is a member of the Student Veterans Association at VCU, which is among the groups supporting the Ruck and Roll this Saturday.

    People watching Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Nursing graduation on May 9 were surprised to see Jada Hargrove’s guest: the baby she held in her arms. Hargrove had received permission to have her son, Elias, join her on the Siegel Center stage for the milestone event, where she earned her undergraduate degree. “I was excited. I felt very empowered to walk across the stage with my baby,” Hargrove said.

    Ashland is on the hunt for a talented songwriter who can vocalize the virtues of the town for its third annual Ashland Song Competition. The contest, now ready for submissions at ashlandfourthfridays.com, is open to musicians of all ages and backgrounds, both local and national.   The contest was inspired by the song “Ashland, Ashland,” written years ago for the Ashland Variety Show, which was produced by the Hanover Arts & Activities Center.
