“We have pleasant weather all through the year.” It’s one of the first things I am told on my visit to the picturesque island of Lanzarote, Spain. Music to the ears! If you are seeking to escape the heat this year, (most of) the world is your oyster. So, dust off that passport and pick a spot on the map... LanzaroteThe stunning Canary island boasts of an all-year pleasant temperature hovering in the 25°C range.

“You live in Goa, how lucky?” This has been a common refrain throughout my life. The truth is, I am fortunate to call Goa my home. It’s not because I live in a ‘Portuguese house’ or have access to the beach or eat, breathe, and sleep fish. Goa is more than just the sun, sand, and sea. While the beaches are picturesque and worthy of attention, a deep exploration of the hinterlands, wildlife sanctuaries, and quiet villages, reveals many other gems.

It’s a hot Sunday and I’m inside an air-conditioned restaurant enjoying a cricket match. The match is unlike any other restaurant and bar because it isn’t streaming on a flat-screen TV but in real-time outside the window. We are at Janot, the newest restaurant in Goa, which occupies space on the third floor of the Panjim Gymkhana. The restaurant looks out onto a cricket field (first built in 1968), where players in white are in the middle of an exciting match.

Dear gentle reader,Welcome to the hottest month of the year! Anyone else using the heat as an excuse to stay away from those looming deadlines? No…it’s just me then? This has been a hectic month that seems to have disappeared in the blink of an eye. Work has been relentless and I am looking forward to a break next month. On a related topic, how does one say ‘no’ to work? I’ve been through many dry patches in this freelancing journey.

Dear gentle reader,Can you believe that we are almost two months into the year 2025? Is this year giving you strange 2020 flashbacks, or is it just me? As some of you know, I used to have an offshoot of this newsletter called Ask Jo, where you could pick my brain for 15 minutes (and above) about freelancing. I wish to bring that back. I don’t claim to be an expert in this but if talking to me can help you in any way, I would be happy to get into a conversation.

The slow indoctrination by the RW in Goa is alarming. It is evident on days like today, and more so when you see saffron flags suddenly cropping up everywhere and statues to Shivaji coming up overnight. This is not the Goa I grew up in, and it scares me.
