Fear. Shame. Anger. Boredom. Sadness. Disgust. These are feelings we don’t enjoy, and we can often go to great lengths to avoid them. This was documented centuries ago by Blaise Pascal, who is quoted to say “All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone.” We try to suppress these emotions, especially fear and shame. Brene Brown has described emotions as like the old string of Christmas lights: when we deny or turn off one light bulb (such as anger) the whole string goes out.

Perhaps the truest form of touching the reality of this moment is this: to experience our capacity to praise and love our world, as it is. Even when it’s on fire. The Arctic is on fire. The rainforest of the Amazon is on fire. The Bolivian rainforest is on fire. Great swaths of Indonesia and Central Africa are on fire. Can we praise our world still? Yes. Last November, I was at a retreat at Spirit Rock. Doing walking meditation outside on the road, just concentrating, placing the foot, lifting the heel.
