1 INTRODUCTION One-third of all forests globally were lost to anthropogenic land use, over half of which during the 20th century (FAO, 2020). The Amazon represents over half of the world's remaining tropical forests and provides critical global scale ecosystem services, including climate regulation (Malhi et al., 2008), carbon storage (Avitabile et al., 2016), and biodiversity retention (Pimm et al., 2014).
