The last time that I left a job, the Y2K computer glitch — which some feared could bring down entire industries — loomed like a specter on the horizon. It was 1999. After graduating from Palo Alto High School and Pomona College in the 1980s, I’d taught piano in Hawaii and used my writing skills at two local nonprofit organizations. As much as I enjoyed that work, I still felt I was searching for my calling.
