The following is an expansion of my talk at this year’s Spinal CSF Leak: Bridging the Gap conference, which took place on November 2-3, 2024 in Aurora, Colorado. As with last year’s presentation, I spoke about the complexity of my case, but this year I was asked to address why I’ve deferred treatment and how I’ve managed to make peace with that decision. The time allotted was quite short, and there was a lot I did not get to include.

Hello again! This is Everything is Amazing, a newsletter about science, curiosity and wonder - and, this season, what’s right above our heads. It’s been a really tough week for science in the United States (and outside it, because of the internationally collaborative nature of research). The growing chaos unleashed by Trump’s administration has been really hard to watch, and it clearly isn’t over yet.

Welcome back to the Curious About Everything Newsletter! CAE 44, last month’s newsletter, is here, if you missed it. The most popular link from last month was Ryan McCormick’s post about the parasympathetic nervous system. This newsletter is free because my other work — my writing on Patreon (monthly membership), my hand-drawn maps of food, and my celiac translation cards — all support me enough to pay the bills.

Welcome back to the Curious About Everything Newsletter! CAE 43, last month’s newsletter, is here, if you missed it. The most popular link from last month was the read about Wim Hof’s history of domestic violence and abuse. Yesterday, I had the honour of presenting my story to a room of patients and physician experts in spinal CSF leak, as well as an audience from 32 countries virtually.

Welcome back to the Curious About Everything Newsletter! CAE 42, last month’s newsletter, is here, if you missed it. The most popular link from last month was my article about my August hospital visit and the futility of preemptive catastrophizing. After getting shingles, I’ve slowly gotten back in the saddle with my volunteering at the Spinal CSF Leak Foundation.

I got many questions about our 🇨🇦 elections today from readers, so I put this primer together. Including how we don’t have exit polls, gerrymandering, and don’t allow any corporate donations to federal election campaigns.

Everything you want to know about #CanadaElections2025 happening now. Here's a comprehensive primer from @legalnomads https://t.co/JBM9O2lNKE

As someone who has had a spinal CSF leak pursuant to a lumbar puncture for 7+ years where repairs have failed, I am very glad to see less invasive tests available for Alzheimer’s.

Most people haven’t heard of this test, which is available in the US. It accurately predicts Alzheimer’s (not just if there’s a risk, but when). It is favorably affected by exercise and likely many other lifestyle factors. Here’s (almost) everything we know about it. In Ground https://t.co/2raTHh5IxD
