Bhutan has partnered with Binance Pay and local bank DK Bank to launch a fully integrated, nation-wide cryptocurrency payment system designed to meet the needs of travellers. The system will allow tourists to pay in crypto using their Binance app after scanning vendor QR codes, reducing issues with foreign exchange fees and patchy support in remote areas.

Ethereum’s Pectra upgrade went live on the network’s mainnet yesterday: touted as Ethereum’s most significant upgrade since the Merge in 2022 when it transitioned to proof-of-stake. Pectra included 11 separate improvement proposals, the most of any Ethereum upgrade, and will see improvements to account abstraction, staking, user experience and network scalability.

A group of democrat lawmakers, led by Representative Maxine Waters, have walked out of a joint hearing to discuss crypto regulation over growing concerns around the Trump family’s involvement in the crypto industry. Waters raised concerns Republicans are working to legitimise what she sees as Trump’s effort to monetise the presidency through crypto at the expense of regular investors.

Donald Trump has denied using his crypto projects to personally profit from the office of president during an interview with NBC’s Meet The Press over the weekend. Recent news that the top 220 $TRUMP token holders would be invited to dine privately with the US president on May 22, caused the token’s market cap to surge over US$100 million. Democrat senators have written to the US Government Ethics Office requesting an urgent enquiry into the planned dinner, warning of “pay to play” corruption.

US-based spot Bitcoin ETFs saw their highest daily net inflows in the past 3 months on April 22. The surge comes after Donald Trump softened his rhetoric on Chinese tariffs, saying the US is going to be “very nice” and will reduce tariffs “substantially”. US-based spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have seen their largest daily inflows since the inauguration of Donald Trump in January, with a total of US$913 million ($AUD1.4b) pouring into the funds on April 22.
