Nathan East showed up with his signature Yamaha bass and new Laney amp and just owned it. The session, called “Three Worlds,” is a straight-up funk workout with Erick Walls (Usher) on guitar and John Paris (Earth, Wind & Fire) on drums. It all went down at Angel City Drumworks in Burbank, and from the jump, Nathan’s tone, feel, and pocket are locked in. He’s the glue here, making it look effortless while holding the whole thing together.

Metallica hit Toronto hard on April 26 as part of their M72 World Tour. Robert Trujillo came out swinging, holding down the low end on his custom metallic gold mirrored Warwick bass. His tone on “Battery” was fat and aggressive, locking in tight with Lars and pushing the whole band forward. He’s a monster onstage, and this clip is proof. The M72 tour is a two-night setup with different sets each night, pulling from across their catalog and the new 72 Seasons record.

This one’s really fun to watch. Janek Gwizdala, Steve Smith, and Manuel Valera take on Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” and flip it into something completely different. What I love about this is you’re not just getting the performance. You’re getting a look at how they build it. You can actually see the writing process happening on the spot as they shape the arrangement and bounce ideas off each other. It’s raw, creative, and locked in by the end.

We’re throwing it back today in honor of Leland Sklar’s birthday, which was yesterday, with a classic live performance from Phil Collins’ Live in Berlin concert in 1990. The song is “Inside Out,” and Sklar is right at the heart of it, doing what he does best: laying down a deep, supportive groove with total finesse. I believe he’s playing a Yamaha bass in this performance, paired with that unmistakable beard and calm focus. Sklar holds it down like only he can.

Will Lee and Steve Gadd. You already know it’s going to be good when those two get together. This live studio session comes from Simon Oslender, who brought them in for the title track off his 2024 record All That Matters. Will and Steve have been locking in since the early Letterman days, and the feel here is just as deep as ever. Will’s playing his Sadowsky 5 string with the quilted maple top, and the tone is exactly what you want. Round, clear, and locked into Gadd’s pocket.
