The group consists of 19 forwards and 15 backs, and will get their championship underway at home to Italy U20 on Friday 31 January at Hive Stadium. Johnny Ventisei will captain the squad, having led the side against Wales U20 in a friendly in December. Freddy Douglas, who won a first Scotland senior cap against Portugal in November last year, is selected as he nears a return from injury.

Scotland face Italy at home on Saturday 1 February and Glasgow Warriors centre Tuipulotu, who was named captain at the tail end of last year, once more assumes the responsibility. There are two uncapped players in the selection: Saracens stand-off Fergus Burke, who qualifies through the lineage of his Glasgow-born grandfather, and Glasgow Warriors No 8 Jack Mann, who has impressed in the Scotstoun back row this season.

The Glasgow Warrior, who made his international debut in 2018, is named at No.8 and will anchor a back row containing openside flanker Rory Darge and Jamie Ritchie, who has been named on the blindside. The rest of Scotland’s starting pack who faced South Africa two weeks ago is reinstated, with Grant Gilchrist and Scott Cummings once more forming the second row. And up front, Ewan Ashman returns at hooker, either side of loosehead prop Pierre Schoeman and Zander Fagerson at tighthead.

Sione believed his grandmother would never be able to see him play rugby at Scottish Gas Murrayfield due to her age and health, however, with Skyscanner and Scottish Rugby’s help Jaqueline Thomson was able to fly ‘home’ for the first time in 12 years and surprise her grandsons ahead of this weekend’s games against Chile and Australia. Thomson (77) now lives in Australia but is originally from Greenock on Scotland’s west coast.
