A new taskforce has been established to look at expanding student numbers at the Ulster University campus in Londonderry. Economy Minister Conor Murphy announced the taskforce during a visit to the campus on Friday. It will be chaired by the chief executive of Manufacturing NI, Stephen Kelly, and will develop a “comprehensive plan for expansion,” the minister said. There has been a long-running campaign to boost student numbers at the campus.

Derry City and Strabane District Council has warned that money from Stormont to help secure City of Derry Airport's future is unlikely this year. The airport is owned by the council and it costs ratepayers £3.45m to help pay operational costs. In a document obtained by BBC News NI, the council said it is facing an estimated £729,000 shortfall in airport funding for the next financial year. The paper was presented to councillors in a in a closed meeting.

There has been a sharp decline in passenger numbers at City of Derry Airport, official figures show. The number of people flying in and out of the airport over the last decade is down, according to figures from the Civil Aviation Authority website. The latest annual figures in 2022 show 163,000 people passed through the airport, less than half the number of passengers just nine years ago. So far in 2023, passenger numbers are down every month since May.

A large illegal dump near Londonderry is costing a Stormont department hundreds of thousands of pounds annually, BBC News NI has learned. It is estimated more than one million tonnes of waste was illegally dumped on the Mobuoy site before it shut in 2013. The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) spent £1.2m managing the risk to public health from the contaminated site between 2013 and 2018. But officials have still not decided the best options to make the site safe.

In a letter seen by BBC News NI, the Executive Office (TEO) warns it "faces a threat of legal action" by a third party if the August gigs proceed. BBC News NI understands the objector is the Ebrington Hotel. It received £15m worth of investment from the then functioning Stormont Executive in January 2022.
