It’s been another action-packed week for fantasy baseball managers looking for saves and holds. We have a new closer in San Francisco, a changing of the guard in Texas, and an injury scare for the closer from DC, who has the second most saves in baseball. A lot has happened since our last article. Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Justin Martinez has been taken off the IL. He doesn’t have a save yet, but he’ll likely resume closing out games for the D’backs before long.

The 2025 MLB closer position has been full of surprises this season. Since our last column, we saw Tampa Bay Rays reliever Mason Montgomery and Chicago Cubs reliever Drew Pomeranz pick up their first saves of the season. Minnesota Twins reliever Danny Coulombe also recorded a rare save. We highlighted Montgomery in an earlier column this season, and while he’s had his ups and downs, he does have six holds.

As fantasy baseball managers, most of us put a lot of effort into evaluating 2025’s MLB closers and late-inning high-leverage relievers, but sometimes saves come from unlikely sources. For instance, Seattle Mariners reliever Carlos Vargas picked up his first career big league save on Tuesday night. He’s been a bit too hittable (20 hits in 17.1 IP, .410 BAA right-handed batters) this season, but he has recorded four holds and has a 2.60 ERA.

It’s been a very hectic week for 2025 MLB closers and fantasy baseball managers looking for saves and holds. Two formerly highly regarded late inning high leverage relievers saw their access to save opportunities “temporarily” suspended. The New York Mets’ bullpen took a big hit this week, and a late inning high leverage reliever who was expected to share a closers role this season is expected to miss significant time.
