The Sixers should be thanking Ace Bailey and his agent right now. Instead of having to decide whether or not to draft a polarizing prospect, Bailey has done enough (in my eyes) to be taken off the Sixers draft board all together. Let’s roll through it all, and try to find some common ground on a player that’s divided this fan base from the moment the Sixers earned the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

Team Topper or Team Castellanos? Ultimately, it’s hard to truly know what was said, how it was uttered, and if there’s more to the story that lead to Nick Castellanos’s consecutive game streak ending last night. But there might be an element to the situation that could have been avoided, and may have been a trigger for the emotional outfielder.

Has the real Orion Kerkering arrived? Prior to the season, last night’s scene in South Florida wouldn’t have been hard to forecast: Phillies 5, Marlins 2. A sparse crowd. A well-pitched night from a Phillies starter. More power out of the road team’s bats. And Kerkering with the save. But early on this season, Kerkering as a late-inning stopper did become hard to envision. At the end of play on May 6, the hard-throwing righty owned a 5.14 ERA.

All is well again. One week after officially hitting rock bottom, the Phillies are red hot again. Winning of five of six, including a three-game sweep of the Blue Jays, will certainly change the temperature of the fan base. Now a huge NL East week begins, starting with a four-game series in Miami before a showdown with the first-place Mets at Citizens Bank Park.

Welcome to “well, we tried!” season. That’s what I like to call this portion of the NBA calendar, where every team with assets is doing everything it possibly can to land difference-making talent. That includes the Sixers, who are armed with the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and a roster that could (theoretically) try to contend next year, get younger and contend, or fully go into rebuilding for the future mode.
