CAPE GIRARDEAU — De Smet volleyball coach Tim Haffner entered the Missouri boys volleyball state championship match Wednesday convinced he still hadn’t seen his team’s best match this season. He has now. De Smet concluded its impressive postseason run with a 25-14, 25-19, 25-19 sweep of St. Louis U. High at Show Me Center. “That might have been our best match this season, and obviously the right time to have your best match of the season,” Haffner said. “We played really well.

CAPE GIRARDEAU — Shawn Hughes made quite the entrance before the Class 4 boys volleyball championship match in 2015. Hughes, a standout outside hitter for St. Louis U. High, was nowhere to be seen during warmups. Even his parents were trying to call him from the stands of the Westminster Christian Academy gym. CAPE GIRARDEAU — De Smet libero Rory Luina may have had an advanced scouting report that helped him make one of the plays of the year in the Class 1 semifinals on Tuesday night. SLUH coach Jeff Cheak handed the keys to the offense to the 6-foot freshman late in the season and Zippay hasn’t looked back. After racking up 54 assists in the state quarterfinal, Zippay had 33 to lead SLUH to an impressive 25-14, 25-15, 25-15 sweep of Rockhurst in the Class 1 semifinals at the Show-Me Center on Tuesday night.

Binge watching Netflix has paid off for the De Smet volleyball team. Spartans coach Tim Haffner was watching a show called “The Playbook | A Coach’s Rules For Life” documentary when inspiration hit. “This particular episode was with Jill Ellis, who (was) the coach for the U.S. women's national soccer team,” Haffner said. “And she was talking about, you know, when the women's soccer team was the No. 1 ranked team in the world, and she had that phrase, pressure is a privilege.
