A city is only as strong as what holds it together. Not just in some abstract way but as in cold hard steel. John Bradfield knew this when more than a century ago he designed the first Sydney rail network and that great backbone of the city, the Harbour Bridge. Most of us don’t see the Harbour Bridge every day but it is still our most defining landmark, not just because of what it looks like but because of what it does: Joining the city together.

Of all the potential answers to the question, “tell me you’re a Marxist without telling me you’re a Marxist”, the phrase, “fascist graves are gender neutral toilets” would have to be among the strongest responses. And indeed this phrase was sported by protesters from a group called “Trans Queer Solidarity” in Melbourne over the weekend — as was, of course, the obligatory Palestinian flag. The group were protesting against a so-called women’s rights demonstration they accused of being anti-trans.

Jack Lo Russo always wanted to be a teacher but ended up doing a decade in IT before a new $10,000-a-year scholarship allowed him to make the switch to his dream job. The federal government had 3000 applications for its first 1000 scholarships under its Be That Teacher campaign, and another 4000 will be handed out in coming years.
