    Legislation that would permit recreational marijuana in certain districts in the city is voted out of a Wilmington City Council committee. The Community Development and Urban Planning Committee Meeting unanimously backed the legislation to regulate and restrict recreational marijuana uses in the city. The legislation - which now goes to the full council - identifies specific zoning districts where cultivation, manufacturing, testing and retail operations can operate by right or special exception.

    Wilmington’s Rodney Reservoir Park has a new target date to open after construction delays this winter. "We were hoping that it would open in May, but because of the lost days due to weather conditions it will now open in the late summer of 2025. So we're thinking the end of August," said Melody Phillips acting director for the Wilmington Parks and Recreation Department. There were 91 days of construction lost due to winter weather that helped push the project’s completion until late summer.

    The Delaware Office of Highway Safety hosts four town halls over the next month. The town hall events are inspired by improved crash and fatality data since OHS’ 2023 town hall series which led to the “Safer Roads Delaware” initiative. Meghan Niddrie is the community relations officer for the Delaware Office of Highway Safety, and she says traffic fatality numbers have especially improved in the last year. "So we have seen some positive improvements in traffic fatalities.

    Eight University of Delaware sponsored visa holders have had their visas terminated by the Department of Homeland Security. Three current students and five former students on post-graduation Optional Practical Training work authorization had their visas revoked. The federal government gave UD no advance notice of the decisions, and the ACLU of Delaware says many of the students also didn’t get any advance notice.

    Wilmington Mayor John Carney looks to launch a youth entrepreneur program for city teens. The pilot program, if approved by Wilmington City Council, would run for six to eight weeks for teens between 14 and 17 years old. Melody Phillips is the acting director for the Wilmington Parks and Recreation department. She says the business development program would be either after school or in the summer. "This way, we have an opportunity to have workshops that are built upon one another,” said Phillips.
