Attorneys for Colin Gray have filed a motion for a change of venue that claims “community feeling is strongly set against him” and would violate his right to a fair trial. “The alleged victims were well-known citizens [of] this county with high public visibility and their alleged murder evokes great passion and prejudice in this community,” the motion states.

By Joe Johnson Brittany Meadows, 36, of Carlton was arrested late the night of April 7th by police who found her asleep at the wheel of her car in thru line at McDonald’s on U.S. Highway 29 North. An employee called police at 11:36 p.m. after the woman reportedly had been asleep for about 15 minutes, causing others in line to drive around her car.

By Joe Johnson On the afternoon of April 8th police responded to University Oaks apartments on a report that a 16-year-old boy had been accidentally shot while cleaning a gun. The first officer to arrive at the scene provided aid to the teen for a wound to his lower abdomen and another to his right bicep. “(The teen) stated to me that he was attempting to clean the gun and it went off,” the officer wrote in his report of the incident.

By Joe Johnson A 62-year-old man died last week after being pulled from his burning house on Winterville Road. John Francis Willcuts was pronounced dead in the ambulance to which he was taken at the scene of the blaze. The fire at 2645 Winterville Road was reported at 12:23 p.m. on April 8 by a passerby who saw flames coming out of the house and called 911. Robert Fleming told police that he was on his way to work at the time.
