The things I do for the weather blog. I wanted to see how hot it’s been since the first day of astronomical summer in Kansas City… not an easy calculation to do because of the various dates of the first day of summer. It’s the reason why we like to use meteorological starts to a season as opposed to astronomical starts to a season.

The things I do for the weather blog. I wanted to see how hot it’s been since the 1st day of astronomical summer in KC…not an easy calculation to do because of the various dates of the 1st day of summer. It’s the reason why we like to use meteorological starts to a season as opposed to astronomical starts to a season. We know that the calendar says summer started on the 20th this year in KC…it doesn’t happen often but since 1950 there have been 11 times where summer started on the 20th.

Well after having a tough time reaching 90° and waiting about 3+ weeks beyond average for our 1st 90° day, right now it’s tough for us NOT to get to at least 90°. Today will be the 6th day in a row that we’re hitting at least 90° and tomorrow may be day #7. A scorching hot air mass caused by a heat dome over the eastern US, bringing them daily and in some cases monthly record highs for June continues to bring heat to the region.

I know it’s been hot out there but the breeze I guess has somewhat helped things .Yesterday we saw a reduction in the dew points during the afternoon, down into the mid 60s, that allowed the heat indices to drop into the upper 90s.

It’s summer, well it technically will be astronomical summer tonight during our 9PM newscast…precisely at 9:42 PM our time. For us in the northern hemisphere the tilt of the earth is actually TOWARDS the sun. The northern hemisphere gets the most sunlight while the southern hemisphere gets the least. It’s night all the time in Antarctica while it’s full on daytime at the North Pole.
