Andrew Douglas’s The Amityville Horror is one of the most profitable entries in the early aughts series of classic horror remakes. Premiering in 2005, it takes the bones of Stuart Rosenberg’s classic haunted house film and throws in plenty of additional violence and gore. Adding to the terror are claims that the story is based on real events. One year after Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family, the Lutzes moved their three children into their house.

Audiences hungry for David Cronenberg’s infamous brand of body horror may have hoped that 2022’s Crimes of the Future marked his return to the genre. That film, which formed an unofficial trilogy that began with 1983’s Videodrome and continued in 1999’s eXistenZ, featured several callbacks to the Canadian director’s recurring visual and thematic interests.

Midway was riding high on Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II by the mid 90s, with more success on the way with a film adaptation set to release in July 1995. However, even before that, creators Ed Boon and John Tobias were prepping for the release of the series’ third entry with Mortal Kombat 3, which once again was aiming to take the series further. Couple that with a massive promotional campaign, Mortal Kombat 3 seemed like a sure-fire success, which it was.
