DAYTON, Ohio -- Alabama State guard Micah Simpson played quarterback in middle school before switching to wide receiver and cornerback as a high schooler in Tennessee. "Flashback," Simpson said, flashing a big smile in the Hornets' locker room. "He's definitely our quarterback," teammate Amarr Knox said. Simpson didn't begin the season throwing long passes downcourt in end-of-game situations, earning the role only around Christmas.

It's how Bracketology began -- when a handful of hoop nerds gathered during "Selection Weekend" and put together an 80-page postseason "Blue Ribbon" guide. This was the ultimate end to spending the entire college basketball season poring over résumés, watching games, and evaluating strengths, weaknesses and possibilities. All on the crew's own time.

And every year, we are handed a bracket by one of our crack assistants to fill out ... in a grand total of five minutes. We make our rushed, thoughtless selections so they can be displayed to the unwashed masses. We know there will be upsets, but which ones? When we pick upsets, we are called reckless. When we go with the "better team," we are called gutless.
