The Salida High School wrestling team dominated James Irwin Charter School Jan. 29, winning their home dual 83-0. All of the eight wrestlers who got a match won by a fall. Five Spartans won by forfeit. “Each time you get one win, it just leads to another one, and it just hypes up the next guy behind them,” coach Steve Myers said. The momentum of winning the early matches helped carry the Spartans through the rest of the match.

The Poncha Springs Board of Trustees will hold a regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at Poncha Springs Town Hall, 333 Burnett Ave. During the meeting trustees will vote on several items, including a consideration of Town of Poncha Springs v. Kenny Wilcox, the Salida High School cross-country and track and field coach, was honored by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as the high school cross-country coach of the year for the state of Colorado. The Salida High School boys’ cross-country team won the state championship in November, and the girls’ team finished third in the state.

The Salida High School boys’ basketball team earned a strong 75-49 victory over the James Irwin Jaguars Jan. 22 at home to improve to 8-2 on the season. An aggressive trapping backcourt press allowed the Spartans to shoot out to an early 16-5 advantage, with most of the points coming from transition layups. The Jaguars were able to battle back with a couple of 3-point makes to cut the lead to 5, but an 8-0 run to end the first quarter gave Salida a 24-11 advantage after the first quarter.
