    The NFL Draft finally arrived, and the Vikings held the 24th pick in the first round. The fans were revved up (when they weren’t fearing that GM Kwesi Adolfo-Mensah would trade the pick) and they got ready to explode at the announcement of the newest Viking. Until they drafted Ohio State Buckeye guard Donovan Jackson. A guard? What? Where is the excitement? But the pick wasn’t a buzzkill. The Vikings are hoping Jackson will be a buzz saw on the offensive line next season.

    The first-ever Vikings draft pick (No. 1 overall) took place in 1961 and was Tommy Mason, a running back from Tulane, who had a nice career. In six seasons with the Vikings, he rushed for 3,252 yards, scored 28 touchdowns, and garnered the nickname Touchdown Tommy. Two picks later (29th overall), they selected Georgia QB “Scramblin’” Fran Tarkenton, who was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

    There’s little news coming out of TCO Performance Center front, as free agency has wound down and the powers that be for the Purple look ahead to the 2025 NFL Draft and pick No. 24 going to the Minnesota Vikings. But that doesn’t mean all is quiet on the Eagan front. Several of the Top 30 prospects in the upcoming draft have visited TCO in recent days and that goes a long way towards speculation on and ask questions about what the Vikes are planning for the biggest day of the offseason.

    It snowed in Minesota in April, so the NFL folks scrambled south and held their winter meetings this week and the news from those confines came flying out across news and sports feeds across the land. Rules changes were offered, accepted and reject, coaches and GMs from the many teams across the league spoke to the media and the Vikings officials, as is their want most seasons, talked about their prospective quarterback(s) for the coming year.

    Free agency continues, but it has slowed in its third week . . . with news of signings dribbling like droplets of sap out of Sugar Maple trees in warming temps. There are names and faces remaining, but what’s still hanging on the FA trees wouldn’t cover your pancakes on Sunday morning.
