South Africa’s director-general of water & sanitation Dr. Sean Phillips painted a dire picture of the country’s efforts to meet its constitutional mandate to provide clean water to all its people. “For the people in Johannesburg now who are experiencing disruptions in their water supply, it is a crisis.”The pivot to optimism we expected was not forthcoming as he sees the failures adding up across the country. “If you look at the results now compared to 10 years ago, you can see there’s a decline.

One year since the U.S. passed the Inflation Reduction Act, the most ambitious climate bill in the country’s history, clean energy is booming. Especially in Texas — which might come a surprise given the crucial role the oil industry plays in the state. But Texas also tells the future about where we’re headed. Great example of outdated tech standing the test of time - typesetting has been automated for a long while pre-AI, but remains a job for a smaller number of specialists on luxury products. The more difficult Q is which luxuries people will pay for.

messed with 4o a little bit today. I’m 100% comfortable saying that AI will never be able to typeset as intentionally as me. I will never be cooked 👍

Nothing stopping them from suing. The law is not settled about this use. The more interesting question to me is ethical - artists I adore from printers to painters to musicians all “steal” in their work. Creatively, theres no limit but what an audience will accept.

@Noahpinion I’m so confused by how OpenAI can get away with this. What’s stopping Miyazaki and co from suing the daylights out of them? I don’t even think it’s bad per say, just baffled by the legality of it

It’s understandable that people who make their livelihood as craftspeople are freaked out by AI. I am too. The question we face is the same one printers faced as printing became accessible to everyone: embrace the tech and a new role, or resist and print wedding invitations?

Miyazaki spent his entire life building one of the most expansive and imaginative bodies of work, all so you could rip it off and use it as a filter for your vacation photos. Not into this one bit. Protect artists.
