MSTCA Small Schools Meet: Norwell makes noise

It’s not often a high school athlete steps into a brand new sport and proceeds to compete at the highest level almost immediately. Not often, but not unheard of. In her first indoor track season, Norwell’s Liliana MacDonald has made the long jump her event and she did it again Sunday at the Coaches Small School Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Center. The Clipper senior continued her streak of torrid long-jumping with her decisive 17-7 1-2 win on the runway.
Division 4 track relays: Luisi, Holliston roll again

Not every team has a Carmen Luisi to close out races. The brilliant distance runner saw to it that Holliston was at the top of the podium, much the way she is in track and cross country so many times. She was definitely a huge factor in Holliston taking home the team title at Sunday’s Div. 4 Coaches Relays with 50 points. Luisi was her usual brilliant self on the Reggie Lewis Center track as she anchored the Panthers to a new school record in the distance medley.
Division 3 track relays: A big day for Billerica’s Ryan Leslie

It will be interesting to see just how fast Billerica distance ace Ryan Leslie runs on the oval when he makes the transition from distance to speed training heading into the championship part of the season. The Northeastern-bound senior, who is one of the most consistent cross country runners in the state, has been plenty fast so far. His strength was evident at Sunday’s Div. 3 Coaches Relays. Leslie ran an anchor leg split of 1:58.1 for the 800 on the way to clinching the sprint medley.
No stopping the Woburn girls, North Andover boys

All week, Woburn girls head coach Jim Fletcher felt uneasy with his squad’s high seeds heading into Saturday’s Div. 2 Coaches Relays. The legendary coach knew he had a wealth of talent up and down the roster, but there was always the nagging feeling that things wouldn’t go as planned. Fletcher, though, needn’t have worried. The Tanner girls wasted no time in separating themselves from the field with wins in the first four events on the way to the team title with 58 points at the Reggie Lewis Center.
Acton-Boxboro boys soar; Newton North, Franklin girls tie

New meet records were on the docket and they came early and often at Saturday’s Div. 1 Coaches Relays. Racing on the Reggie Lewis Center infield before a large, enthusiastic crowd, Acton-Boxboro’s lineup of Osselmann Chai, Noah Stegmeier, Ivan Yan and William Hurlbut-Lesk outdueled Lexington in a record 25.28 seconds in the shuttle hurdles.
North Reading girls, Amesbury boys rule

North Reading’s girls watched calmly as Weston and Pentucket battled atop the standings on the track and infield of Friday’s Div. 5 Coaches Relays. The Hornets had a pair of early eighth-place finishes, but were quiet in the running events. Their time to make a move was just around the corner. North Reading cut loose in a big way with a sweep in the field events and hopscotched over the field to capture the team title with 46 points.
Northeast Invitational: Pembroke’s Claflin dominates

It was one of the marquee events of the Northeast Invitational on Sunday, but Pembroke’s Sarah Claflin made her win in the 55-meter dash look academic. The versatile and super-competitive Claflin, who was a triple winner with her 17-5 mark in the long jump and 25.66 victory in the 200, had a clean start in the 55 final and accelerated into the lead, breaking the tape in a Massachusetts-best of 7.15 seconds this season.
Northeast Regional: Luisi blazes to win

And just like that, Holliston great Carmen Luisi is back pulverizing quality competition as she has done so many times the last four years. Luisi’s win in the 1000 at Saturday’s second day of the MSTCA Northeast Invitational will go down as one of her finest moments on the track.
