It’s not often a high school athlete steps into a brand new sport and proceeds to compete at the highest level almost immediately. Not often, but not unheard of. It will be interesting to see just how fast Billerica distance ace Ryan Leslie runs on the oval when he makes the transition from distance to speed training heading into the championship part of the season. The Northeastern-bound senior, who is one of the most consistent cross country runners in the state, has been plenty fast so far. His strength was evident at Sunday’s Div. 3 Coaches Relays. Leslie ran an anchor leg split of 1:58.1 for the 800 on the way to clinching the sprint medley.
