The Kumulipo, the Native Hawaiian creation chant, says the world began with a single coral polyp. This story was recounted to me by Mark Hixon, a reef ecologist at the University of Hawaii, one afternoon on Hanauma Bay, one of Oahu’s most beautiful beaches. Green volcanic peaks curtained the horizon; a near full moon rose to the east. The soft warm sand had been groomed smooth.
