Dante Porter is new Ligonier Valley boys' basketball coach

Ligonier Valley School District’s Board of Directors approved the hiring of Dante Porter on Monday, July 8, as the next boys basketball coach. Porter takes over the program after the resignation of Tim Gustin. Porter was associate head basketball coach of Geibel Catholic Junior-Senior School from 2018 to 2023, where his team was a five-time WPIAL qualifier, PIAA state qualifier three times, and earned third place and fourth place in the WPIAL in 2022 and 2023.

Madison Griffin is well-known throughout the Valley for her softball skills. She was certainly a leading lady in her Rams uniform, and had some impressive statistics throughout high school. Griffin has just finished her sophomore season at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She contributed to the team’s fifth-place finish in the conference, and has benefited greatly through strong coaching and hard-working teammates. “Our team did really well,” Griffin reflected.

It’s quite a shame that the scammers have made a full-time job of hurting others instead of trying to earn an honest day’s work. I am simply overwhelmed at the number of scams on social media these days. It’s sad because most of the victims of these scams are just trying to help out and yet being taken advantage of by a scammer. The scam I’ve been seeing the most lately is the missing child or pet scam. The scammers are posting photos of the child or pet.

Jeff Page is more than just the voice of the Rams. His voice is heard at every Friday evening home football game at Weller Field, inside the gymnasium at home basketball games and announcing senior nights and the district’s Hall of Fame event. But, when he’s not announcing, there is a good likelihood that he is in attendance at the event — cheering on the Rams and encouraging their success.
Wallace left her mark at LVHS

Ligonier Valley High School’s Class of 2024 graduate Clara Wallace participated in the PIAA state finals in three sports — cross-country, bocce and track and field. Quite well-known for her athletic ability, Wallace is just as well-known for her kindness, authenticity and trademark smile. She also performed excellently in the classroom and earned an achievement award for excellence in visual arts.

A lifelong lover of the Ligonier Valley, Irma Hutchinson bleeds red and black, and is probably the biggest cheerleader for the Ligonier Valley School District. Serving on the school board for decades, Hutchinson has been a voice-of-reason, diligently working to ensure the best decisions are made for the students, and advocating for the best for the district, always.

In his speech at graduation as Class of 2022 president, MJ Knupp reflected on his admiration and appreciation for staff members at Ligonier Valley High School. He particularly mentioned high school guidance secretary Mary Beth Monardo. “During senior year, I was an office helper,” he explained. “After I completed my tasks, I would sit in the guidance office where I would talk with Mrs. Monardo. This soon became the highlight of my day because she is the best storyteller.

Recently, I read the comments on social media announcing an organization’s event honoring some folks and — yes, there was that one token person who’s always in the comments. The same parent who always keeps track of only their child’s stats at sporting events and is centered only on the accomplishments of their child over the group was ridiculing the organization and questioning how they decided to honor deserving individuals. There’s always that one.

Living in a world that is quick to spread misinformation, sometimes folks hear stories that our schools aren’t teaching life lessons or being effective. Ligonier Valley School District continues to prove that it is through many initiatives, including the middle school’s very beneficial garden club, which intertwines into the sciences and across grade levels. Throughout the school year, the gardening club collaborates with sixth-graders to cultivate vegetables and flowers.

To say it has been a phenomenal year at Penn State for Derry Area alumus John Kerr would be an understatement. Kerr, who is in the five-year accounting program, earned a starting spot on the men’s volleyball team last season, and hasn’t looked back since. Instead, he’s just kept raking in the accolades. An awesome story, Kerr didn’t start during his first four years with the program. This season, he’s not only started, but left an impact.
